Industrial Design Centre - IIT Bombay
IDC Bombay, or the Industrial Design Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, is a premier design school in India. Established in 1969, founded by the legendary industrial designer and architect Prof. Achyut Kanvinde offers a four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program, a two-year Master of Design (M.Des) program, and a Ph.D. program in design.
IDC Bombay is known for its unique interdisciplinary approach to design education. The school believes that design cannot be taught in isolation, and hence, it emphasises collaboration across different disciplines such as engineering, social sciences, management, and humanities.
The curriculum at IDC Bombay is rigorous and challenging, and it is designed to encourage students to think creatively and critically. The program is structured to expose students to a wide range of design disciplines such as product design, transportation design, communication design, and interaction design, among others.
IDC Bombay conducts an entrance examination known as the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for admission to its undergraduate (B.Des) and postgraduate (M.Des) programs. The DAT is a two-part examination that tests a candidate's design aptitude and skills.
Part 1 of the DAT is a written test that assesses a candidate's visual perception abilities, design sensitivity, and creativity. The test comprises multiple-choice questions and requires candidates to sketch, draw, and write short descriptions in response to given prompts. The written test is typically conducted for 2-3 hours.
Part 2 of the DAT is a studio test that evaluates a candidate's design skills and problem-solving abilities. The test requires candidates to work on design problems and create design solutions within a given time frame. The studio test is conducted for 3-4 hours.
Both the written and studio tests are conducted on the same day, and candidates must clear both tests to be eligible for admission. The DAT is a highly competitive examination, and the selection process is rigorous. Candidates who score well in the DAT are shortlisted for a personal interview, which is the final stage of the selection process.
IDC Bombay has a strong alumni network that is spread across the world. The school has produced some of the most successful and influential designers in India, who have gone on to make a significant impact in their respective fields. The alumni network is actively involved in the school's activities and initiatives, and they often collaborate with the school to support student projects and mentorship programs.
