National Institute of Design - NID
The National Institute of Design (NID) is one of the most prestigious design schools in India. Established in 1961 by the Government of India, the NID was created with the aim of promoting excellence in design education and research. Today, the institute has three campuses located in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Bengaluru, and is known for its comprehensive design programs that cover a range of disciplines such as Product Design, Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film and Video Communication, Exhibition Design, and more.
Apart from its comprehensive design programs, the NID is also known for its research and innovation initiatives. The research cell collaborates with industry partners, government agencies, and other academic institutions to develop innovative design solutions that address real-world challenges.
The entrance process of NID involves two stages:
Design Aptitude Test (DAT)
Studio Test and Interview

Design Aptitude Test (DAT):
The DAT is a written test that evaluates the candidate's knowledge, comprehension, analysis, creativity, and visualisation skills. The test comprises of two parts:
Part 1: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) that assess the candidate's knowledge in various areas such as General Knowledge, Maths, English, and Analytical Reasoning.
Part 2: Subjective questions that test the candidate's design aptitude and visualisation skills. The questions can be in the form of sketches, drawings, or written responses.
The DAT is conducted in two formats:
Prelims: This is the first stage of the entrance process. Candidates who qualify in the prelims are eligible to appear for the Studio Test and Interview.
Mains: This is the final stage of the entrance process. Candidates who qualify in the mains are offered admission to various design programs at NID.
Studio Test and Interview:
Candidates who qualify in the prelims have to appear for the Studio Test and Interview. The Studio Test assesses the candidate's ability to create, ideate, and execute design solutions. The Studio Test may include tasks such as model making, material exploration, and sketching, among others.
The Interview is a personal interaction between the candidate and the interview panel. The panel assesses the candidate's design aptitude, creativity, communication skills, and suitability for the design program.
